Problem:
University with 20,000 students in NE that needed to support a mobile student population and professors in classrooms and staff in offices
Current Centrex user and trialing IP/PBXs. Liked the IP/PBX applications, but don’t have IT resources to support or funds to deploy large IP/PBXs, most IP/PBXs can’t scale that large yet despite claims
Deploying fixed phones to students is costly to install and maintain
Centrex changes happen more slowly and are still costly
Students and professors want more “mobile” applications in general
Students need flexible conferencing options for team meetings to cut down need to face to face meetings
Solution:
New service continue management of services, yet gives a fixed cost per user and provides new features needed for different users
Students get inexpensive IP phones and browser to access services that can be used form any browser and when they go home over vacations and summer
Additional option for personal locator and conferencing is available
No software to download to student PCs
Telecom staff assigns students numbers via browser-based management portal
Teachers and IT personnel receive Find Me/Follow Me since they are out of office frequently
New Applications
  • University makes money on selling communications services to students year-rounds since they keep their number “activated” and can keep it for duration of time at school
  • Teachers could use one click forwarding to allow students to reach them which provided better accessibility to students
  • Teachers set up TA and graduate students as VIPs so they can easily be reached
  • IT staff sold two of the speed dial buttons on phones to local businesses: first one is Kinko’s and second one Pizza Hut so students can easily dial - defrays cost of services
  • Professors and staff can easily work from home and still feel plugged in
Value Proposition
  • New service allowed University to avoid gearing up resources to support IP/PBX, but improved ease of M,A,C,s which easily shifted to IT staff
  • Fixed cost per user made budgeting simple
  • Allowed University to treat telecom cost as operating expense rather than dipping into capital budgets
